Speech Code Theory (The Ethnografy of Communication)

Speech code was first published by Gerry Philipsen. This theory tries to find the relationship between communications and culture. This theory is trying to answer about the existence of speech codes in a culture, how the substance and strength in a culture.
Gerry Philipsen using ethnographic methods in his research. Ethnographic method is a research method that puts a premium / gift for finding the sense that people share in a cultural gift. For example, among others, namely: Pacanowsky analysis of organizational culture and Clifford Geertz's study of life in the community with a symbolic interaction approach. In his studies of the speech code, Gerry Philipsen submit the following propositions:
a. Wherever there is a culture, there was found a typical speech code.
b. A speech code includes the rhetorical, psychological, and cultural sociology.
c. Discussion of significant dependent speech code that used the speaker and listener to make the creation and interpretation of their communications.
d. The terms, rules, and related premise into the conversation itself.
e. Usefulness of a Speech codes together is to create adequate conditions to predict, explain, and control the discourse about intelligent formula, prudens (wise, be careful) and the morality of communication behavior.

A. Proposition Theory
Wherever there is a culture, there was found a typical speech code. Each culture has a distinctive speech code. Uniqueness may be because we know about the structure of the speech code itself states, communities, and action strategies.

B. Forming elements of speech code
A speech code includes the rhetorical, psychological, and cultural sociology.
a. Rhetoric: discovery of truth and persuasive appeal.
b. Psychology: every speech code associated with the nature of individuals with special ways.
c. Sociology: a speech code provides for a system to answer what connects between self and other that can be viewed with appropriate, what resources to symbolically link it.

C. The meaning of the conversation
Discussion of significant dependent speech code that used the speaker and listener to make creation and interpret their communication. If they want to understand the main conversation in a culture, we should hear the way people speak and responds. The meaning of the conversations there are three dimensions, among others, as follows:
1. Close relationships: the relationship is close enough.
2. Open relationship: each party to hear and show willingness to change its uniqueness.
3. Supportive relationships: where the people are fully put myself in the interaction of a neutral, a positive response.

D. Place of speech code
The terms, rules, and related premise into the conversation itself. There are three things associated with it, namely:
1. Cultural tales.
2. Social drama: a public confrontation.
3. A ritual worship the image: ritual: Toraja, Bali, Jogjakarta.

E. Usefulness of a Speech codes together is to create adequate conditions to predict, explain, and control the discourse about intelligent formula, prudens (wise, be careful) and the morality of communication behavior.
